Are Lawyers Maximizing Their Time on Twitter (Or Wasting It)?

Twitter birdToday, two interesting things happened on Twitter and I ended up spending most of my evening writing blog posts as a result.

First, @scottgreenfield questioned why I would give up my million dollar law firm to become a lawyer marketing coach.

Then, @lancegodard wrote a post about whether lawyer should be using Twitter for something more than just talking to other lawyers.

I wrote a long blog post in reply to @scottgreenfield’s question and now I need to let it sit for the night and revisit in the morning before posting to ensure I haven’t left anything important out.

So, I decided I’d go ahead and post in response to @lancegodard tonight so I can test out posting on my new blog and because this has been an issue on my mind for a while.

I intended to write something about this, but @lancegodard has done far better than I would have.

Lance, I wanted to post a comment on your blog post directly, but it was getting too long, so here’s what I was going to say:

Here’s the deal, I’ve noticed there are two types of lawyers out there.  I’m sure there are more, but in the context of lawyer marketing in general, there are two.

Type 1:  Cares a heck of a lot more about how they appear to other lawyers than they do to clients.

Type 2:  Cares more about how they appear to clients than to other lawyers.

For the Type 1 lawyer, Twitter appears to be the water cooler.  It’s a place to see and be seen, shoot the breeze, and socialize.  Type 1 folks aren’t following very many people in their own local community and probably aren’t following anyone other than other lawyers.

For the Type 2 lawyer, Twitter may be a water cooler, but it’s also a source of business.  For these folks, they are strategically using Twitter to get listend in directories in their communities and are actively discussing the services they offer.

Obviously, I think the Type 2 people are using twitter much more effectively.  And, I think expanding out into full on client communications is a great idea.  I’ve done something like this by providing subscribers to my Law Business Revolution E-Newsletter with private TwitTips through Twitter when they let me know they are there from the newsletter.  I just began doing it, so I’ll have to keep you posted on how it goes.
